Andrews Building, Cardiff, UK
Demolition of two major cinemas and retention of facade of Grade II listed building in busy city centre site.
Andrews Building retail development involved the demolition of two major cinemas and the retention of a Grade II listed facade. The demolition works were complicated by a constrained city centre site with neighbouring properties, and also by the fact that an existing retail unit was required to maintain trading throughout the project in the centre of the new retail facade.
QuadConsult staff were responsible for the civil and structural design for Scottish Widows. The scheme is a traditional steel frame of up to four storeys with composite slab floors, split vertically to achieve five trading units. The existing stone facade facing Queen Street was refurbished, with facing brick elevations elsewhere. The specification was to provide a shell and core facility for tenant fit out and to maintain the new development in two discrete buildings to allow the subsequent disposal of one or the other, or both, to suit the property market.
