All the latest from QuadConsult

Following Chris Usher's appointment as a Director of QuadConsult Ltd in June 2010, Chris has now formally stepped down from his position as a Company Director as he begins the transition towards retirement.

We are delighted that Chris will continue to support the business as a consultant, providing the invaluable knowledge, experience and guidance that have been instrumental in shaping the company over the past 15 years.

During his time with QuadConsult, Chris has played a pivotal role in developing the business into a highly respected civil and structural engineering consultancy, delivering exemplary services across a wide range of sectors including commercial, renewable energy, residential and heritage projects.

Succession planning has been a key focus for the business over recent years, culminating in the successful transition of ownership in early 2025 to the existing long-standing Directors of the company. This careful planning has ensured continuity for our clients, staff and project partners while positioning the business for continued growth and success.

The Directors and shareholders of QuadConsult would like to express their sincere thanks to Chris for his commitment, leadership and contribution to the business. We look forward to continuing to work closely with him during this next chapter and wish him every happiness as he gradually moves towards a well-earned retirement.

“I’m delighted to receive the ICE Wales Cymru Award for being the top BEng graduate of 2026 for Civil Engineering Swansea University / Prifysgol Abertawe. Balancing my final year with my work here has been a fantastic experience, and I'm really grateful for all the support and encouragement I've received from the team. I’m excited to build on this momentum as I continue my career with QuadConsult Limited.”

A fantastic week for women in engineering at QuadConsult Limited!

Last week, our Civils Technician Kelsey Eady and Flood Risk & Drainage Strategy Engineer Kayleigh McCulla attended the LUSH Cymru (Ladies Unite in Social Housing) event in Cardiff. This wonderful annual celebration brings together professionals from social housing, development, leadership, community engagement and support services — all united in networking and championing women in the industry.

Yesterday, 23 June, marked International Women in Engineering Day 2026 — a global celebration of the incredible achievements of women engineers everywhere, under the theme #EngineeringIntelligence.

At QuadConsult Limited, we are incredibly proud of our talented team, and we are delighted to have such a strong and inspiring group of female engineering and support staff driving our work forward every day.

Here's to the women shaping the future of engineering!

We are pleased to share that our engineering team have successfully been approved as a Structural Engineers Registration (SER) Certifier, and that QuadConsult is now an approved SER Certifying Body.

This milestone reflects our continued commitment to delivering robust, compliant structural design and certification in line with the Building (Scotland) Regulations. It also strengthens our ability to support clients with efficient, high-quality SER Certification across a range of projects, including more complex and higher-risk developments.

We’re also excited to be expanding our presence in Scotland with the opening of a new office in South Gyle, Edinburgh

QuadConsult provided civil and structural engineering support as part of the wider design team for this prestige project in the heart of Merthyr. Unanimous Outline Planning Approval was granted for the proposed residential development with over 400 homes, a community hub along with a food and drink establishment.

QuadConsult Limited is pleased to support Millbank Primary School in Cardiff with their ‘Millbank Express Day’ this year. We are delighted to provide festive selection boxes, delivered by Santa, to bring extra Christmas cheer for the children.

QuadConsult Limited would like to thank to our amazing team and their partners for contributing to the success of our annual Christmas party. This year, we celebrated The Vale Resort a fantastic venue that added to the occasion. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

We’re delighted to announce that QuadConsult has recently expanded our team with the addition of a dedicated Flood Risk and Drainage Strategy Engineer, further enhancing our capability to support architects, developers, and planning consultants across all stages of project delivery.

With this additional expertise, we can provide comprehensive Flood Consequence Assessments (FCAs), Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs), and Drainage Strategy Reports—helping clients meet planning and regulatory requirements with confidence and efficiency.

Our Flood Risk and Drainage Services Include:

• Flood Consequence Assessments (FCA) in accordance with TAN15 (2025) and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) guidance
• Flood Risk Assessments (FRA), including liaison with Lead Local Flood Authorities (LLFA) and the Environment Agency (EA)
• Drainage Strategy Reports and Sustainable Drainage (SuDS) design
• SAB (SuDS Approval Body) applications

Whether you’re preparing a new planning application or progressing through detailed design, our in-house specialists can provide clear, compliant, and cost-effective solutions to manage flood risk and drainage design challenges.

QuadConsult warmly welcomes Cedric Williams as its newest Principal Engineer. Cedric, based in our Cardiff office, has 17 years of experience under his belt and he is a chartered structural engineer. He has developed his career within a variety of companies, providing project management, design, and technical assessment of structures, including complex alterations to existing buildings. His role is also to support the company Directors with their workload commitments. Great to have you as part of the team, Cedric!

QuadConsult held their annual Team Building Event at Pontyclun Athletic Bowles Club. The day involved building towers, role play as well as learning the art of bowels and skittles. Another successful event with smiles and enjoyment throughout the day. The aim of the day was to ensure staff from across our three offices enjoyed an entertaining day, strengthening our working relationships further.

QuadConsult is proud to have completed the design of wind turbine foundations, access tracks, crane hard standings, drainage and other infrastructure for the Alaska Wind Farm, the only wind farm in Dorset and the only wind farm under construction in England during our involvement.

QuadConsult provided services to the Design & Construct Balance of Plant Contractor, Knights Brown, on behalf of the developer, Infinergy.   The project was short listed for a prestigious Regen Green Energy Award in the Clean Energy category.

The site was particularly challenging because it was within an operational sand quarry with steep gradients and other challenging geometry.  However, four Vestas V80 2.0MW turbines were successfully installed to provide clean energy for up to 5,200 homes.

QuadConsult is pleased to announce a key leadership transition as the company moves into an exciting new chapter. Chris Usher will be stepping down as Managing Director, with leadership responsibilities transitioning to Andrew Villis, William Harrow, and Mark Llewellin—each of whom currently serves as a Director listed on Companies House. This change follows years of careful succession planning and marks a natural evolution for the business. Rest assured, it remains very much business as usual.

Chris Usher’s Legacy at QuadConsult

Chris Usher started QuadConsult in June 2010. Over the past fourteen years his leadership has been instrumental in shaping the company’s growth and success. With support from Steve McCarthy, a fellow Director from 2012 to 2021, Chris helped guide the company through a period of sustained development and expansion.

With a career spanning over four decades, Chris began his professional journey with the BBC’s Mast and Tower Division before moving into structural steelwork fabrication. His achievements include:

• Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers
• Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers
• Former Chair of the Wales Branch of the IStructE where he also won a commendation for services to the Institution, and where he advocated strongly for sustainability in structural engineering

Andrew Villis’s Journey to Leadership

Andrew Villis first met Chris Usher in 2003 during an interview at a consultancy where Chris served as Structural Director. Their professional paths remained aligned and in 2014 Andrew joined QuadConsult. Since then, with Chris as both mentor and role model Andrew has played a key role in growing the company from a team of four in Cardiff to a thirty-strong workforce across offices in Cardiff, Gloucester and Cross Hands.

Thank You, Chris

Chris has brought exceptional and inspiring leadership, vision, and dedication. While he’ll be selling his shares in the business, he’ll continue working with QuadConsult during this next phase. His outstanding service, expertise and presence will remain a vital part of the company’s ongoing journey.  His legacy will leave a lasting mark on the company, and it’ll continue to benefit from his experience and guidance.

Statement from Chris

It has been a great privilege to grow QuadConsult based on the most fundamental of principles - striving to exceed client’s expectations, and providing a rewarding, pleasant work experience for staff. This could not have happened without the support and engagement of our exceptional colleagues. It is my intention to be closely involved with staff, workload, and clients on a diminishing basis for some time to come to achieve a gentle and controlled exit from the business, but I will forever follow the fortunes of QuadConsult and offer loyal support for their cause.

The business continues, managed by the finest colleagues I have had the privilege of working with, and supported by the most wonderful staff. I have complete confidence that the company will go from strength to strength staying loyal to our core principles and excelling in the expertise that QuadConsult offers.

Thank you to all our clients who have trusted us with your projects, many of whom are now personal friends, and thank you to our loyal and diligent staff without whom QuadConsult would not enjoy the prestige and success that we have achieved together.

Finally, a big thank you to Andrew, who will take the helm, and to Will, and Mark who together have the privilege of taking QuadConsult forward to further success.

Spring has arrived and so has the enthusiasm of the kids of Millbank Primary School in Cardiff to start planting and growing again. The school is lucky to have a garden area along with a greenhouse so the children can learn skills growing vegetables and flowers, and QuadConsult has once again supplied gardening equipment to allow a full class of children to participate in their gardening club sessions.

Have another successful growing season, girls and boys!

When QuadConsult heard that Pontyclun Athletic Bowls Club were looking for sponsors we stepped in with the result that the Club's scoreboard is looking very smart for the beginning of the outdoor season in April.  The Club, in Rhondda Cynon Taf, aims to encourage people of all ages and abilities to play the game, and we wish them the very best for the coming season of competitions.

Continuing the momentum of expansion for QuadConsult, the Gloucester team have moved into larger offices at Southgate House in the vibrant and historic Docks area. The move provides a more spacious working environment for the current team, a hot desk for collaborative working with staff from our other locations and – just as importantly - capacity to expand as we grow our presence in England.

Our address remains the same, and the office benefits from easy access to the M5/M4 corridor offering good links to our clients, working partners and sites in South Wales, the Midlands and South West England.

QuadConsult warmly welcomes Daniel Brooks as its newest Structural Engineer.  Daniel, based in our Cross Hands office, graduated with MEng(Hons) in Structural Engineering six years ago.  Since then he’s developed his career within a variety of companies, taking Lead Engineer and Project Management roles on commercial, industrial and domestic structural engineering design projects.  He is proficient in a variety of engineering software, and is an experienced team leader.  Now a Graduate Member of both ICE and IStructE, Daniel is preparing his application to sit his Chartered Professional Review with ICE in Spring 2025.

In his spare time Daniel enjoys sports, travelling and hiking.  Great to have you as part of the team, Daniel!

QuadConsult is pleased to share that Joshua Lines-Zechmann, Project Engineer in our Cross Hands office, has become an Associate Member of the Association for Project Safety (APS).

This strengthens our Principal Designer services by reinforcing our commitment to construction health, safety, and risk management. Being part of the APS keeps us up-to-date with industry best practices and regulations, helping us deliver safer and more efficient projects for our clients.

Well done, Joshua!

QuadConsult is very pleased that after nearly three years client Woodstock Homes has gained planning approval for sixty-eight energy-efficient homes in St George, Bristol.  The development will feature one and two bed apartments in five blocks, plus public open spaces, flood defences and towpath improvements – homes that are much needed in the city.

Construction begins later this year, and having provided Civil and Structural engineering support in relation to the proposed drainage strategy, flood risk assessment and structural condition surveys we look forward to continuing to assist Woodstock Homes on this high quality project.

Just before joining the QuadConsult team in Gloucester, Senior Structural Engineer Ondrej Cizek passed his exam to become chartered.

Earlier this month he visited IStructE HQ in London for the award ceremony where he was presented with his certificate by Tanya de Hoog, 2024 President of IStructE.

Ondrej was part a group of engineers elected as IStructE Members or Fellows in 2024, and QuadConsult is very proud to see him receive his certificate in such prestigious surroundings.  Very well deserved indeed, Ondrej!

Looking very smart in their new kit are some representatives of the twenty players currently enrolled in the Peniel Panthers Under 9s team, a community run football group for youngsters aged under 6 to under 14 who train at Richmond Park, home of Carmarthen Town AFC.

Quad Director Andrew Villis is one of three coaches training the Under 9s to compete weekly in the Carmarthen Football Mini leagues. Andrew has coached the same group of children from Under 7s, seeing them and the group flourish and rise from six members to the healthy team it is today.

QuadConsult was delighted to hear that the Panthers kicked off 2025 by being invited to be mascots at a Carmarthen Town Welsh league game on New Years Day against Ammanford.  A great way to start the year!

Due to increasing workload and expansion of staff numbers QuadConsult has moved from Llandybie into brand new offices on the Parc Gelli Werdd development at Cross Hands, near Llanelli, West Wales.  We’re really pleased to be based on this new and sustainable business park which has very easy access from the A48/M4.  It’s close to the old office so remains a very convenient site for all our West Wales clients.

Three staff are currently based there, with another in the new year, and we’re looking for more motivated people with a passion for engineering to join too.   Take a look at the Careers page on this website if you want to know more about what Quad could offer your career plans.
